Start an Outreach and Mission Group

' Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.' (Luke 14:23)

Often times we have to be intentional in reaching out to others, as our daily life routines would never cause us to ever meet some people, even though they also have a need for Christ.

Outreach and Mission Groups are for people who would like to evangelise, serve their local community, reach out through short-term mission trips, and support missions.

Moblising Others

Starting a group would involve reaching out and mobilising others to reach out with you. The ability to moblise is very crucial if you are going to build your team. This is having the ability and credibility to motivate others for the Gospel's sake, so having a healthy relationship with the Lord and good relationships with members of the body of Christ and having access to them, is vital for your team's development.

First, you will need to identity one or two people with a similar passion, who you can begin to fellowship, pray and outreach with. Often times these people are already in your personal network, you would need to ask the Holy Spirit to tell you whom to approach. They may be people who you know, or friends of friends with a similar passion.

Once you have located those two or three people, you can begin meeting and reaching out together. People always like to gather around a cause, so be clear about your cause and be excited about its prospects.

You are a Leader and Pioneer

As an outreach and mission group leader, you are a pioneer, you would often have to take the initiative, meaning you would often have to walk by faith and take risks.

This work is groundbreaking as you are constantly going to be pioneering new fronts. The rewards are great! Your spiritual life would become active and alive, and it would deepen your intimacy with the Lord. You would start to walk in a new dimension as you begin to walk in Jesus' shoes. Never feel you are alone in this, know that the Lord has prepared others who would be walking alongside you.

Pray and decide on if your outreach is going to be to your local community, your region, another part of your nation, international or a combination of regions. Irrespective of where you would like to reach out to, you always have to start somewhere, so be specific and narrow down on a place, an organisation, or people group.

Ideas for Outreach and Mission Activities

Outreach activities that you can be involved in may include building relationships with:

  • local hospitals, then visiting and praying for the sick.
  • local prisons, visiting the prisoners, caring for them and discipling them.
  • schools, conducting outreaches to schoolchildren and setting up fellowships for discipling them.
  • remand homes and orphanages, and ministering to the children in their care
  • and pastoring local market communities, visiting them and praying for their needs.
  • and pastoring slums dwellers, and setting up project that minister to their needs
  • pastors of new, growing or struggling churches, and supporting them with their outreach efforts.
  • pastors in a district and putting on regular evangelistic crusades together, then handing over the converts to the local churches.
  • and pastoring unreached in villages, conducting crusades, setting up groups for discipling converts, planting churches, and setting up projects to meet their needs.
  • other FOGWO local, regional, national, and international outreach teams and conduct outreaches together.

"Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.' (Matthew 25 -37-40.)
